In the beginning

Did you know that the earliest reference to magnets dates back to more than 2,500 years ago - when magnetic lodestones were discovered by the Greeks?

The word magnet actually comes from the Greek word ‘Magnetis Lithos’ meaning ‘Magnesian Stone’, a reference to Turkey, where the stones were originally discovered.

However, it wasn’t till 1930 that professors Dr. Yogoro Kato and Dr. Takeshi Takei accidentally produced the first ferrite magnet at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Two decades later, mass production of ferrite began as an alternative to metallic magnets.

They’re now a commonly found in a wide range of products, such as; loudspeakers, transformers, electronic inductors and fridge magnets.

What are ferrite magnets actually made from?

There are two raw materials used to produce ferrite magnets - strontium carbonate and iron oxide.

It consists of around 90% iron oxide and 10% strontium carbonate, which are both low cost and abundantly available.

Ferrite is hugely popular for a number of reasons, such as their resistance to heat (up to 250’C), their resistance to being demagnetised and their high magnetic permeability (which allows them to store strong magnetic fields).

Plus, their durability means they are likely to exceed the life cycle of the applications they’re used with.
