With the journey through Industry 4.0, how are you getting your business on the Digital Transformation path?

As we glide through Industry 4.0, many sectors are doing what they can to innovate and stay up to date. Keeping with the times is detrimental to a businesses’ longevity, as those who aren’t making change run the risks of falling behind the competition. When it comes to the Manufacturing and Engineering sectors, digital transformation is a necessity as the sectors are finding ways to become more sustainable and achieve the world’s net zero goals.

So what does Digital Transformation look like?

Firstly, the term ‘digital transformation’ simply means to adopt digital technology in a business, transforming from paper, traditional methods. This type of business development is key in growth plans, as technology provides a more sustainable process. An example would be to develop a traditional job sheet method to a digital CRM system which provides useful data and tracking of orders.

Digital Transformation takes patience and perseverance

As much as technology is driving the world today, it still needs people to action the drive and make it all happen. And where there are people, there is emotion and a reluctance to change. Digital transformation takes time and patience to get your workforce on board and a certain approach is needed. As we all know, change is inevitable but that doesn’t stop a workforce from not being convinced enough to jump on board. So here’s a couple of tips to follow when it comes to your digital transformation journey:

1. Your business only works when your workforce culture is positive

As we’ve mentioned in a previous blog, workforce culture is key to a businesses success and providing a positive environment when it comes to making change can be the turning point.

“When organizations deploy new solutions, they expect a return. The return is never realized when people fail to adopt. So in this sense, the solution is never the technology. The solution is how people leverage technology to work differently.” - enterprisersproject.com

As a business owner, you need to have a bespoke approach when it comes to implementing digital transformation - each person adopting the change will react differently. Have patience, understanding and be sure to explain why you’re making these changes. Find out any concerns, be happy to answer questions. These are the things you should be thinking about to enable your transition period to be a lot smoother.

2. Make sure to involve the workforce as much as possible

Once you have your workforce on board in the initial stages of transformation, you need to involve them in every stage. The benefits of this not only so everyone feels included, but understands how to utilize the technology to its full advantage. Your ‘shop floor’ staff are the ones who understand how all of the processes work and what needs to be improved. Working together will show how important your workforce are, reinforcing the need for digital transformation to keep business growth on the rise.
